Overview of West Toronto

West Toronto initially included parts of the city of Toronto from east of Palmerston Avenue to north or Queen Street West. In 1914, this riding was redefined as bounded by Queen Street West, Spadina Avenue, Bloor Street West and Dovercourt Road. The residential neighbourhood is inhabited largely by recent immigrants to Canada. West Toronto also has some of the city’s most colourful and unique neighbourhoods. In the early 1900s, the Italian immigrants started buying up affordable homes and opening shops along College Street, which is now known as Little Italy. Nowadays this neighbourhood is becoming increasingly popular with young people because of its chic restaurants, cafes and vibrant nightlife as well as the proximity to the downtown core. Further west from this neighbourhood, you will find Roncesvalles Village which is the heart of the city’s Polish community named after a valley in Spain.
